Do you need to know which denture is best for you?

About Dentures or False Teeth
A denture or false teeth is a removable replacement for missing teeth. It is made of acrylic, sometimes in combination with various metals. Complete dentures replace all the teeth, while a partial denture fills in the spaces created by missing teeth and prevents other teeth from changing position.

What are the different types of dentures or false teeth?
DentureTech are proud to offer a wide selection of dentures to their patients. We have designed two ranges of denture, with all budgets and requirements in mind.

Partial Denture Ranges
Partial dentures are used to replace one or several missing teeth. If you have your natural teeth, then a partial denture may be the answer for you. Read more on partial dentures here

Full Denture Services
Full dentures are used when you don’t have any natural teeth. You could be missing teeth in the upper or lower jaw or both. We have a wide range of full denture options which you can read more about here

Have you lost most or all of your teeth?
Candidates for complete dentures have lost most or all of their teeth.

Still have some natural teeth?
A partial denture is suitable for those who have some natural teeth remaining.

A denture improves chewing ability and speech

What will my denture cost?

Different types of dentures
Full Dentures - Top and Bottom (No natural teeth left in jaws)
Full Top Dentures (No natural teeth left in top jaw)
Full Lower Dentures (No natural teeth left in bottom)

Partial Dentures - Top and Bottom (Missing teeth in the top and bottom jaws)
Partial Dentures - Top (Missing teeth in the top jaw)
Partial Dentures - Lower (Missing teeth in the bottom jaw)

The basic stages of denture manufacture are as follows (these may vary depending on the type of denture you have made):

  • Initial impression(s). Using a vanilla-flavoured alginate material, your Clinician will take an impression of your mouth.
  • Special tray(s). Using moulds created from the initial impression, a special tray (the device used to hold the impression material) is made especially for the unique shape of your mouth. This enables us to get the most precise copy of your mouth possible.
  • Bite block(s). A technique used to determine & measure the relationship between your upper and lower jaw.
  • Try in. Your new artificial teeth are set in wax onto a base. This is your opportunity to assess the aesthetics of your new denture, and make any changes, prior to the denture being completed.
  • Finish. Your final appointment in which your new denture is fitted.
  • PIC (Post Insertion Check). Applies to DentureMax patients. Takes place 7 days after your denture has been inserted.

Small adjustments (eases) may be required after the denture is fitted. All appointments are included in the cost of your denture.

The average life expectancy of a denture is 7-10 years. Although the denture is likely to last considerably longer than this, the shape of your mouth will have changed and an older denture can harbour bacteria that may cause oral health problems.

Your denture is in use for most of the 24 hours of every day, and needs regular servicing if it is to function at its best. Throughout life the jawbones change in shape. They tend to shrink, which results in an alteration of the “bite”. This causes a loss of chewing efficiency, a loss of appearance, loosening of the denture, and general discomfort of the mouth.

These changes can be rectified, but if left too long rehabilitation becomes very difficult. The rate of change depends on age, health and many other factors. Therefore, it varies from person to person.

While you may be advised to wear your denture almost constantly during the first two weeks, even while you sleep, under normal circumstances it is considered best to remove it at night. Research has shown that removing the denture for at least eight hours during either the day or night allows the gum tissue to rest and allows normal stimulation and cleansing by the tongue and saliva. This promotes better long-term health of the gums.

An immediate denture is fitted by your Dentist or Oral Surgeon at the time of the extraction of your natural teeth. Your denture is therefore made before your teeth are removed. Immediate dentures are a popular choice for people requiring a first denture.

Most dentures will function satisfactorily for 7-10 years if checked and adjusted at least annually. During this time it may be necessary to “reline” a denture, which involves processing in a new fitting surface to improve the fit, and “eases” may be necessary to ensure optimal comfort.

Artificial teeth are generally not as strong as natural teeth and will wear with age. The better the quality of the tooth, the longer the life expectancy. Worn artificial teeth cannot be fixed or rebuilt. If your denture is worn to the point where is it interfering with function you will need to replace it.

From an oral health perspective it is also necessary to replace your denture every 7-10 years. Bacteria builds up even in the most carefully cleaned denture. It is also important to have an oral examination annually, even if you have no natural teeth of your own. The incidence of oral cancer rivals cervical and skin cancer and denture wearers must be vigilant.

If you experience any of the following it may be time for a new denture:

  • Difficulty eating with your denture
  • Cheek biting
  • Speech difficulties
  • Red or inflamed tissues
  • Clicking noises
  • Discomfort when wearing your denture
  • Cracked corners of your mouth
